2/28/2015 1 Comment The Last Snowfall for awhile??The last day of February 2015. We have probably about 3 - 4 inches of snow on the ground! Totally unexpected and not even the brilliant "weather guys" predicted this.
5/12/2014 1 Comment The East Mountain Overlook![]() The "Lookout" was a concrete slab with a fence around it for years. In the late 80's, a local artisan was hired to build this Gazebo and it's now a hot spot for weddings. It's just up the hill from the Cottages on the main road. There are literally hundreds of photos of the Lookout with fall colors in the background. This was snapped by me in early May with fresh new green leaves and it looks just as beautiful with a plain backdrop. 5/6/2014 0 Comments Rock on!![]() Rocks and Bluffs....it's always hard for me not to get excited about them. Especially since the Ozark Mountain region is one of the oldest on the planet. These bluffs were formed millions of years ago from sediment formed on the shoreline and bottom from ancient oceans. Weathering and erosion turned them into shapes and layers that I look at everyday when I walk. These bluffs are located on Hazel Street...(a 3 min. walk from our Cottages) I'm posting more rock photos soon! ![]() Soldier Spring. This is about a 6 minute walk from the Cottages on Nut Street. Rumors are that a Civil War Soldier "hid out" in the tiny cave and another rumor is that a couple of Bushwhackers were discovered hiding there and killed in a skirmish. The Spring runs underground most of the time unless there's a nice long rain. It's a lovely spot with lots of rock bluffs and has never been "dressed up" by the Parks Crew. It's left in it's natural state and we like it that way. 5/1/2014 0 Comments May 01st, 2014![]() This is my first attempt at blogging. I plan on updating about what's going on in Eureka and throw in a little history. In springtime, I'll report on what's blooming... The Dogwoods are exquisite this year. And weather reports. I have lived here 42 years and I still love it here. Wildflower Cottages are located on what's known as "East Mountain". During Eureka's "hay day", back at the turn of the century, our side of town was where the "Mohawks" lived. The other side of town was where the "Silk Stockings" lived. The laborers "Mohawks" lived on East Mountain and worked for the rich folks "Silk Stockings" on West Mountain. The Mohawks got to town using "Jacob's Ladder". It's a concrete staircase connecting Main Street with East Mountain. It was originally built of wood until the '50's when concrete was poured. It's located a few yards from Wildflower Cottage and has many steps (some say 200 steps, but I've never counted) to get you downtown in record time. Getting back up the mountain staircase burns hundreds of calories! A real "Stair Master". I will be posting photos of the neighborhood so folks can see the side of Eureka Springs that we call home. |
